Trevor Noah was born on February 20, 1984. He is a South African comedian, political commentator and television presenter. He is the current host of The Daily Show, an American satirical news program on Comedy Central.

Noah was born in Johannesburg and began his career as a comedian, presenter and actor in his South African homeland in 2002. He then held several roles as a television presenter at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and finished second in season 4 of South Africa’s iteration from Strictly Come Dancing in 2008.

Noah dropped his radio show and acting to focus on comedy and performed with South African comedians such as David Kau, Kagiso Lediga, Riaad Moosa, Darren Simpson, Marc Lottering, Barry Hilton and Nik Rabinowitz  as Paul Rodriguez, Carl Barron, Dan Ilic and Paul Zerdin as well as opening act for the American comedian Gabriel Iglesias in November 2007 and the Canadian comedian Russell Peters on his South Africa tour.

Noah hosted an educational TV show, Run the Adventure (2004-2006) on SABC 2. In 2007, he hosted The Real Goboza, a gossip show on SABC 1, and Siyadlala, a sports show at SABC. In 2011 he moved to the USA. On January 6, 2012, Noah was the first South African stand-up comedian to appear on The Tonight Show. and on May 17, 2013, he was the first to appear on the Late Show with David Letterman. Noah was the subject of the 2012 documentary You Laugh But It’s True.

In the same year he played in the one-man comedy show Trevor Noah: The Racist, which was based on his similarly titled South African special That’s Racist. On September 12, Noah was the roaster in a comedy central roast by South African Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr.

In 2013 he performed the comedy special Trevor Noah: African American. On October 11, 2013, he was a guest on the BBC Two comedy panel show QI. On November 29, 2013, he was a panelist in the Channel 4 game show 8 out of 10 cats and appeared on September 12, 2014 in 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown on Sean Lock’s team.

Staring on The daily show

In December 2014, Noah became a recurring contributor to The Daily Show. On March 30, 2015, Comedy Central announced that Noah would follow Jon Stewart as the host of the Daily Show. His tenure began on September 28, 2015.

Within hours of being announced as Stewart’s successor, jokes were posted on the Internet that Noah posted on his Twitter account, some of which were offensive to women, and others as anti-Semitic criticized or making fun of the Holocaust. Noah replied with a tweet: “Reducing my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land doesn’t reflect my character or my development as a comedian.”

Comedy Central stood behind Noah and said in a statement: “Like many comedians, Trevor Noah crosses borders; he is provocative and spares no one, even himself … Judging him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair.

Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central. “Mary Kluk, chairman of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD), said the jokes were not indicative of anti-Jewish prejudice and were part of Noah’s comedy style.

Noah’s debut received positive reviews. James Poniewozik of the New York Times praised Noah and the show’s authors, saying, “Mr. Noah’s debut was largely successful, also because the operating system – the writing of the show – was under the surface.” Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times described Noah as “charming and relaxed – almost inevitably reserved compared to the habitually antique and astonished Stewart”. Noah’s success on the show has resulted in three stand-up specials for Comedy Central and Netflix.

On September 14, 2017, it was announced that Comedy Central had extended Noah’s contract as the host of the Daily Show by five years until 2022. He will also produce and host annual end-of-year specials for Comedy Central.

In April 2017, it was announced that Noah was developing a talk show for Jordan Klepper. In July 2017, the show’s title was announced as The Opposition with Jordan Klepper and premiered on September 25, 2017. On June 15, 2018, Comedy Central announced that the show will be canceled after a season, but Klepper will host a new prime time weekly documentary, Klepper. The series premiered on May 9, 2019.

In February 2018, it was announced that Noah, as Executive Producer, would produce a show with Roy Wood Jr. titled Jefferson County: Probation. In March 2018, Noah signed a multi-year contract with Viacom, which gives a first look at Noah’s future projects, be it television, feature films or short-form video content.
