Tory Lanez Early life
Daystar Peterson was born on July 27, 1992 in Canada to Bajan’s father, Sonstar, and Curaçao and Guyanese mother Luella. The family was based in Montreal, before moving to Miami, Florida.
Daystar was known to practice and refine his rapping skills throughout his childhood, before tragically discovering that his mother had died of a rare disease. Following his mother’s death, his father began working as a pastor and missionary, causing them to move frequently throughout the United States.
Daystar’s father later remarried and the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where Daystar met his friend Hakeem, then a porter. He was given the nickname Daystar “Lanez” by Hakeem, as a comment on Daystar’s buzz seeking trends, which sometimes saw him rolling around in the street, not looking for traffic and playing in the lanes.

In 2006, he was sent to live with his cousin Dahir Abib, Orane Forrest, in Jamaica, Queens, New York, because of his behavior issues. Daystar was then forced to return to Toronto with his grandmother. Since she refused to care for him, he was alone at 15. “Eventually, I moved into the city center with these three bugs that I didn’t really know.
I came into the house and didn’t realize how things worked. From like 15 to 18, I was just fighting them. Every man was for himself. That’s what made me a man, having to look after myself and being in a situation where there is no father, no grandmother and no mum to your help you. The person I am today changed “, he said.
He then started rapping again, before giving himself a nickname, Notorious (which is a reference to the dead Notorious B.I.G. rapper he idolized), and adopting his new moniker “Tory Lanez”. At the age of 16, Daystar dropped out of tenth grade, and would begin performing songs at the outdoor concerts.

Tory Lanez Joyner Lucas beef
In November 2018, during an Instagram Live session, Lanez claimed he was a better rapper than American rapper Joyner Lucas. In response, Lucas challenged Lane Lane to a rap battle, which led to the release of several diss records between the two, including the “Lucky You Freestyle” and the “Zeze Freestyle”.
Although the beef was short-lived, Lanez expressed a lack of attention to those who sided with Lucas. The end of the beef was once more noticeable when the two released remixes of DaBaby’s song, Suge.
Shortly after his beef with Joyner Lucas followed, New York rapper Don Q dropped a battle track called “I’m Not Joyner”, claiming Lanez stole Q. Tory Lanez fired back with a track called “Dom Queen”, before Q responds with another diss track.
Another rapper, a Dreamville artist, JID, was involved in the beef, and appeared to be dissatisfied with previous statements Lanez made aimed at his mentor, J. Cole. Lanez then challenged the entire Dreamville artist roster in response, with rapists including Dreamdoll responding with their own tracks aimed at Lanez.
In response to Tory Lanez’s diverse rap beef, Karlton Jahmal of Hip-hop publication HotNewHipHop said “the art of competitive lyrical battle rap has been missing from the mainstream wave for years …”, until Lanez brought ‘ the culture is exactly what it has been missing with its friendly yet competitive take. Jahmal concluded that Lanez is essentially “engineering a general movement back into the roots of hip-hop… more about experiencing lyrical talent than they are about completely destroying an opponent”.
Tory Lanez Legal issues
On March 26, 2016, during a concert in Midland, Texas, violent scuffles occurred between the security forces and concerts. Lanez then went on to tell the crowd to “fuck shit up,” which prompted a full riot and forced the police to close the show. Several people were arrested. The venue and concert promoters are considering legal action against Lanez.
