Atalanta BC will try to win back Inter Milan’s second place in Italy’s top flight when they face Parma in the penultimate match of their 2019-20 Serie A season on Tuesday evening.
La Dea fell back to third place on Saturday thanks to Inter’s 3-0 win in Genoa, while Parma are currently in tenth place in the standings, just two points below the top eight.
Parma has won 13, drawn seven and lost 16 of its 36 Serie A games this season. In the process, he scored 46 points, finishing tenth in the standings to secure a top half finish.
The Crusaders finished 14th last season on their return to the top flight, but are likely to improve this season, as the club may be looking for the highest Serie A finish since sixth place in 2013 to 2014.
In fact, Roberto D’Aversa’s side are just two points behind eighth-placed Sassuolo in the same number of matches, and will face each other on Tuesday after two impressive results.
Parma defeated Napoli on Wednesday before beating Brescia on Saturday, but they suffered a 0-5 defeat when they travelled to Atalanta for the return leg in January.
Atalanta will play against Atalanta on Thursday night after a 1-1 draw with AC Milan on Tuesday. La Dea have been unbeaten in Serie A since 20 January, but could end their hopes of winning the title before they go out on the pitch for the match.
Indeed, Juventus would win the title with a win over Sampdoria on Sunday night and would put Atalanta in a battle with Inter and Lazio for second place, which would still make for an excellent campaign.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have lost only five of their 36 league games this season – the same number as Juve – and scored 96 goals. This is certainly the best attacking record in the league.
Atalanta have never finished runners-up in Serie A, while they were a team in the lower half between 2011 and 2016, having only secured their return to the top flight for the 2011/12 season.
However, they have improved considerably over the last four seasons and will try to finish their national season on a positive note before taking on Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on 12 August.

Parma will continue to be without the services of Hernani, Matteo Scozzarella and Andreas Cornelius due to injury, while Gaston Brugman has doubts about the home side.
Brugman did indeed miss Brescia due to a suspension based on the booking he received against Napoli. The midfielder, however, is struggling with a muscle problem and could therefore remain absent.
Gervinho could start through the middle again for the home side, with Dejan Kulusevski, who is heading for Juventus this summer, in a wide position.

As for Atalanta, Gasperini, who still has reservations about Josip Ilicic, is expected to mix his pack from the draw against Milan, with Luis Muriel, Timothy Castagne and Mario Pasalic likely to return to the starting eleven.
Jose Luis Palomino should also be at the centre of the defence, but Marten de Roon and Alejandro Gomez should keep their places in the team.
Duvan Zapata scored against Milan but could now fall on the bench to allow Muriel to return.
Parma possible starting lineup:
Sepe, Laurini, Iacoponi, Dermaku, Darmian, Kucka, Kurtic, Barilla, Kulusevski, Gervinho, Caprari
Atalanta possible starting lineup grid:
Gollini; Toloi, Palomino, Djimsiti; Gosens, Freuler, De Roon, Castagne; Pasalic; Muriel, Gomez
Match prediction: Parma vs Atalanta
We say: Parma 0-2 Atalanta
Parma won the last two to move up to tenth place in the standings, but we find it difficult to predict a home win on Tuesday evening. Atalanta will be desperately trying to finish second if they cannot win the title, and we predict a two-goal win for Gasperini’s side in this match.
