William Barr defends federal deployments at Hearings

Democrats and Republicans use the hearing to preview issues that will be raised in the 2020 presidential campaign

Attorney General William Barr clashed with Congressional Democrats at a hearing on Tuesday in which he denied allegations that he was working to politically strengthen President Trump on several fronts, including the use of federal agents in response to protests and his personal intervention in criminal cases involving the president’s allies.

The Democrats launched a full-scale attack on Attorney General William Barr at Tuesday’s Justice Committee hearing and repeatedly clashed with Barr as the hearing jerked from issue to issue.

Here are the key findings from Barr’s first appearance before the Justice Committee in his 17-month term as Attorney General.

Democrats were looking for blood

The Speaker of the House of Representatives’ Justice Department, Jerry Nadler of New York, and the Democrats on the panel did not offer Barr the subtleties that congressional witnesses usually receive. Democrats repeatedly cut off Barr’s answers, accusing him of being wrong or lying, and made it clear that they were not interested in the explanations he offered.

Barr was not allowed additional time at the end of each legislature’s five-minute session to respond to questions witnesses normally receive. The Republicans had to use their time to let Barr push back the Democratic accusations.

The effort was clearly part of a Democratic strategy to show that they had already passed their verdict on Barr’s tenure as Attorney General – and nothing he could say would affect that.

Democrats accused Barr of putting President Donald Trump’s interests before the country, and they attacked the Attorney General for his involvement in prosecuting cases involving Trump employees, his reaction to police protests, his reaction to Coronavirus, his removal of a U.S. attorney, and many other issues.

The last Democratic questioner, Rep. Veronica Escobar of Texas, accused Barr of refusing to uphold his oath and defend the Constitution, and prompted Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio to protest the accusation as the hearing drew to a close.

William Barr Net Worth

William Barr made a name for himself as attorney general for two presidents, George H. W. Bush and Donald J. Trump. But he made his fortune out of office and, as CEO and director for some of the largest U.S. companies, he collected more than $50 million in compensation.

Today, Barr, who has not commented on this story, has estimated net assets of $40 million after taking into account taxes, personal expenses and modest investment returns. This figure is more accurate than the figures in Barr’s report on public financial disclosure, a document that is only covered in broad terms, with assets worth between $24 and $74 million.
