Luka Modric Childhood and Early Life
Luka Modric was born in the Croatian town of Zadar, whose history was truly beautiful. In the early nineties his family had to leave; they settled in the tourist town of Zaton while the father was in the army and the Yugoslavian wars escalated. The family lived in an old hotel.
The parents did not tell their son that the fatherland was torn apart by war. The grandfather of the future football star became the war victim: just like other high ranking villagers he was executed.
When the father returned, the boy’s football talents could finally be developed. The parents did not hesitate to spend money on it: despite the financial ordeals and the modest salary, the father paid the son’s education at a sports academy.
The player remembered in one of his interviews that coach Tomislav Bašić personally made him his first shin protectors; he immediately recognized the boys’ fascinating abilities.
Luka is not the only football player in the family: Croatian player Mark Viduka who plays for Australia is Modrić’s nephew.
The novice footballer signed his first contract in 2002: the 16-year-old man started his career in Dinamo Zagreb. Luka Modric played a season in the youth team and was then loaned out by Zrinjski, the member of the Premier League of Bosnia. In this team, the young man showed his universal style of playing and became one of the most talented Bosnian athletes.
Later Inter Zaprešić lent the player; Modrić turned out to be an incredible player who helped the club win the silver medal at the country’s championship. In a while, the “home” club took back the talented player who was called “the hope of Croatia”.
The athlete signed the 10-year contract with Dinamo. He immediately entered the first eleven and became a playmaker who sometimes performed the functions of the left striker in midfield. The athlete spent six years in this team; Dinamo won several trophies including victory in the national championship and went to the UEFA Europa League. Luka Modric became the champion of Croatia and the player of the year.
The athlete started the 2008-2009 season triumphantly. The clubs of the world wanted to see him among their members: Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona. Modrić chose Tottenham (London); the transfer costs were £16.5 million.
Luka Modric got the position of a central midfielder, which was unusual for him. It was difficult for the young player, and some fans found the purchase useless. They once even called Modrić a lightweight and accused him of not wanting to play – in fact, the athlete could not do so because of a knee injury.
The situation changed dramatically when the new coach Harry Redknapp came in. He put Modrić in the right position and the Croat’s game evolved: numerous goals followed. First, Modrić scored against Spartak Moscow.
Modrić’s talents manifested themselves at their best in Real Madrid, where Luka switched in the late summer of 2012. He wore the T-shirt with number 10. In the following year, fans fell in love with Modrić’s game and the player became one of the most famous team members. Although he couldn’t beat Cristiano Ronaldo, he managed to attack beautifully, worked diligently on defense and delighted his fans with strikingly beautiful goals.
People often applauded for his spectacular feints. Each season Modrić’s statistics improved: the accuracy of the passes and the athlete’s approach were of high quality. He also scored and took the ball well.
The footballer had a lot of nicknames. The Spaniards called him “lucky Luka” and even “Pony” for his light weight and shortness: the athlete is 172 cm. tall, and his weight is 66 kg. Newspapers were full of laudatory articles: the Croatian athlete added the Balkan freshness to Real Madrid.
In 2017 the European media learned that the transfer costs of Modrić have changed from 45 to 40 million euros. In 2018, its annual profit in Real Madrid was €10.5 million.
Luka Modric was the primary candidate for the title of best footballer 2017 according to France Football. Harry Kane, N’Golo Canté, Kylian Mbappé, Sergio Ramos and Gianluigi Buffon were also on the list of candidates. In the end it was Cristiano Ronaldo who got the Ballon d’Or. In that same year Modrić made it to the top 20 of FIFA.
In 2006 Modrić was invited to join the Croatian national team. For the first time, the athlete played with Argentina; he scored his first goal in the game with Italy, making him a constant member of the national team.
In Euro-2008 Modrić did his best and broke the record: his goal for the Austrian Gate was the fastest goal in the history of the European competition. The Croatian team won against Austria and Germany. Two people stood out: Luka Modrić was called the brains of the team, and Ivan Rakitić was her heart and soul.

In the spring of 2018 Luka was involved in the scandal related to the anti-corruption investigation in Croatian football. The case against Zdravko Mamić, the former head of Dinamo Zagreb, was pending: the man was accused of embezzlement of money raised from the transfer of Luka to Tottenham.
The football star was also under investigation: the prosecutors believed that Modrić gave a false statement in the description of the transfer details. If the player’s guilt is proven, he will have to go to jail for five years.
By summer, the fans have again received a gloomy message: the best Croatian midfielder who will celebrate his 33rd birthday may be replaced by a younger player. Christian Eriksen, Piotr Zieliński, Marco Verratti and Paul Pogba are among the candidates for the position in Real Madrid. The player of Juventus Miralem Pjanić will be named among the favourites.
However, Luka Modric contract does not expire until 2020, when Luka wants to end his career. His dream is to hang his boots in the club that brought him world fame.
