Joe Diffie was born in 1958 to a family of musicians in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His first musical performance was at the age of 14 in a country music band of his aunt Anita.  Diffie’s father Joe R. plays guitar and banjo, and his mother sings.

Following her mother’s footsteps, Diffie has been singing since she was a child, and often listens to her father’s albums. Diffie said, “His mom and dad claimed that was able to sing in harmony when he was three years old.”

His family moved to San Antonio, Texas in first grade, and then He moved to Washington, where he studied fourth and fifth grades. He later moved to Wisconsin, not in sixth grade until the second grade of high school, and then returned to Oklahoma, where he attended high school in Velma.

In the last two years of high school, Diffie played football, baseball and golf in addition to running. In high school, he was recognized as the best all-around male athlete.

After graduation, he attended Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. Although he initially earned credit for medical school, after his first marriage in 1977, he decided to give up his medical major and eventually drop out of school before graduation.

Joe Diffie first worked in the oil field, then drove a truck to pump concrete in the oil field in Alice, Texas, then returned to Duncan to work at the foundry. During this time, he was observing the work of musicians, first in a gospel group called “Higher Purpose” and then in a bluegrass band called “Special Edition”.  Joe Diffie then established a recording studio, Joe Diffie began touring Special Editions within neighboring states, and sent demonstration of his recordings to distributors in Nashville.

Hank Thompson recorded Diffie’s Love on the Rock, and Randy Travis shelved a song from Diffie but ended up not recording .

Professional music career

Between 1990 and 1991: The record label released his first album,  A Thousand Winding Roads at the end of 1990, with Montgomery and Johnny Slate as producers.

Its first single, “Home,” topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

The song also topped the country music charts released by Radio & Records and Gavin Report, making him the first country music artist to make a single on all three charts for the first time.

His first wife was Janise Parker, who was married when he was in college. The couple had two children, Parker and Kara, and then divorced in 1986. Parker later became Diffie’s highway manager in the mid-2000s. In mid-2010, Kara and he participated in the audition for American Idol.

Two years after divorcing Janise, Joe Diffie married nurse technician Debbie Jones. They have two sons, Drew and Tyler, who were born with Down syndrome and died in 1991 from complications of tonsillectomy.

In 2000, Joe Diffie married his former Theresa Crump, who met at a concert at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville. Their marriage resulted in a daughter, Kylie Tarissa, who was born in 2004. The couple divorced in 2017. Diffie married Tara Terpening in the Music Hall of Fame on May 26, 2018 until his death on March 28, 2020.
