Early Life, Childhood, Musical and Jewish — Upbringing
Drake was born in Toronto, Canada on October 24, 1986 as Aubrey Drake Graham and grew up with music in his blood. His father Dennis Graham was the drummer of the legendary rock and roll star Jerry Lee Lewis. An uncle, Larry Graham, played bass for Sly and the Family Stone. Drake says that his mother, Sandi Graham, also comes from a “very musical” family – his grandmother, who babysits Aretha Franklin.

Drake has a diverse and unique ethnic and religious background. His father is an African-American Catholic and his mother is a white Canadian Jew. About his personal identity, Drake says:
“At the end of the – day, I consider my-self a black man because I am more immersed in black culture than anyone else. Being Jewish is a cool thing. It makes me unique.” “”
Drake’s parents got divorced when he was five and he was raised by his mother in Forest Hill, a wealthy and mostly Jewish neighborhood in Toronto. He attended the Jewish day school, had a bar mitzvah at the age of 13 and watched the Jewish holy days with his mother.
“My mother used to make Hanukkah fun,” Drake recalls. “When I was younger, she gave cool gifts and she made latkes.”
Despite his Jewish upbringing, Drake feels isolated at the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, his practically pure white high school.
Drake said that “nobody understood what it was like to be black and Jewish”, but added that “it made me much stronger to be different than everyone else”.

‘Degrassi: “The Next Generation”
It was one of Drake’s classmates in Forest Hill who gave him entry into the entertainment industry.
“There was a child in my class whose father was an agent,” said Drake later, adding, “His father said, ‘If someone in the class makes you laugh, let them audition for me.’ After the audition, he became my agent. “
Shortly thereafter, in 2001, Drake landed a role in the Canadian teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation. The show followed the dramatic life of a group of teenagers at Degrassi High School, and Drake played the role of Jimmy Brooks, sometimes called “Wheelchair Jimmy”, a basketball star who is permanently in a wheelchair when shot by a classmate.
Drake dropped out of school to continue his acting career. He only graduated from high school in 2012. He played in the show Degrassi for seven years (2001-2009) and received the Young Artist Award in 2002 for the best Assemble in a TV series.
From ‘Degrassi’ to Signing With Lil Wayne’s Music Label
While Drake was still performing on Degrassi, Drake tried to move into the world of hip hop. In 2006 he published his first mixtape, Room for Improvement, and achieved a modest turnover of around 6,000 copies. This was followed in 2007 by the publication of another mixtape, Comeback Season, on his own Very Own imprint from October (later abbreviated to OVO).
This included Drake’s first hit single and the music video “Replacement Girl”, which was featured as the new joint of the day on BET’s popular hip-hop TV show 106 & Park.
In 2008, the producers of Degrassi revised the cast and removed Drake’s character. Without his steady source of income and without significant money as a rapper, Drake was about to find a job.
“I came to terms with the fact that … I might have to work in a restaurant or something just to keep things going,” he recalls.

Hotline Bling’ Earns Grammy Award
Personal obstacles never seem to distract Drake for long. The 2013 song “Started From The Bottom” from his critically acclaimed 2013 album Nothing Was the Same reflected his personal struggle for success. “I just wanted to announce that I worked really hard to get here, and it wasn’t just a coincidence and it wasn’t easy,” he told MTV News.
After Drake released a couple of mixtapes in 2015, including working with Future, his fourth studio album Views followed in spring 2016. The album was an instant hit, debuted at # 1 and spent 13 consecutive weeks on the billboard charts. His hit singles included the sultry “Hotline Bling”, with which the artist Grammy won the best rap song and the best rap / sung performance in early 2017
After the ceremony he took swipes at the Grammys for shoehorning him into the rap category. Speaking in an interview on Apple’s Beats, the day after the awards, he said:
“I’m a black artist, I’m apparently a rapper, even though Hotline Bling is not a rap song. I won two awards but I don’t even want them.”

Both Drake and Brown found themselves facing legal consequences for their actions.

He was also sued by Rappin 4-Tay and the estate of the jazz musician Jimmy Smith. Squabbles with other artists have also supporting his career. Drake recorded two diss tracks directed directly at Mill, “Charged Up” and “Back to Back” in a single week in 2015.
