Tevez was giving birth by his parents, Carlos Alberto Martínez and his mother’s surname was Ciudadela, from Buenos Aires Province, and he was raised in the neighborhood of Ejército de Los Andes, better known as “Fuerte Apache”. It was from there he got the nickname “El Apache”.

His biological parents were Juan Alberto Cabral and Fabiana “Trina” Martínez. He was adopted by his mother’s sister Adriana Noemí Martínez and her husband Segundo Raimundo Tévez. His adopted parents changed their adopted father’s surname during a conflict between his junior boys All Boys and Boca Juniors.

As a 16-year-old, Tevez debuted for Boca Juniors against Talleres de Córdoba in Torneo Apertura in the Argentine Primera Division 2001 – 02 October 21, 2001. Boca Juniors was crowned champion of Copa Libertadores in 2001 and met Bayern Munich in 2001 Intercontinental Cup 27. November, losing 1–0, although Tevez was not in the squad. He went on to score 1 goal in 11 series matches in the 2001–02 season.

Boca finished first in its Copa Libertadores group in 2002 and had reached the quarterfinals, where they met Paraguay’s Club Olympics on May 8. Tevez scored after 18 minutes in the first stage to give Boca Juniors a 1-0 lead, until Olimpia equalized the scores in the 67th minute when Boca defender Cristian Traverso scored his own goal. Boca lost the second team 1–0 in Asuncion on May 16.

Manchester United submitted a proposed two-year loan agreement for Tevez, which was approved on August 10, 2007. He debuted on August 15 when he started in place of injured Wayne Rooney in a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth. On September 23, he scored his first goal in a 2-0 home win against Chelsea.

In November, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that the club wanted to sign Tevez permanently, saying: “He gets me 15 goals this season, and they will also be important goals.” Tevez met with an ovation and sang “It’s Only One Carlos Tevez” from West Ham supporters when he returned to Upton Park for a away match (lost by Manchester United) on December 29.

Tevez scored a total of five goals during Manchester United’s successful UEFA Champions League campaign 2007–08. He also scored the first penalty in the kickoff against Chelsea in the final, which Manchester United won 6-5 after the match ended 1-1 after extra-time.

Tevez scored his first league goal in the 2008–09 season on September 13, 2008 in a 2–1 away game against Liverpool, and his first hat-trick came on December 3, 2008, when he scored a quartet of goals in United’s 5–3 League Cup – win over Blackburn Rovers in the fifth round. His first UEFA Champions League goal of the season, against Aalborg BK on December 10, was the fastest goal scored in the 2008–09 tournament in two minutes and 41 seconds.

The Bayern Munich dispute

On September 27, 2011, Tevez was named as a replacement for City’s games in Bayern Munich.  Mancini has claimed Tevez refused to come on as a substitute in the second half when City were 2-0 down to Bavaria, although Tevez denied and said it was a misunderstanding.

Tevez’s actions received widespread condemnation from various understanding people and commentators, with Mancini claiming he wanted Tevez “out of Manchester City” and that he would never play for the club again.

Tevez was suspended by Manchester City for a maximum period of two weeks when the club started an investigation into whether he refused to move on as a substitute.  Following discussions with Mancini, club owner Sheikh Mansour agreed that Tevez should be placed on garden leave where the Argentine would be paid in full, but was asked to stay away from the Manchester City training ground.

On February 21, Tevez publicly apologized “sincerely and unreservedly” for his behavior, and withdrew his appeal over the city’s decision to severely fined him. Tevez returned to Manchester City’s first team in a 2-1 home win against Chelsea on March 21, coming for Nigel de Jong in the 66th minute before giving the assist to Samir Nasri’s winning goal.  His first goal of the season came four games later, the third goal in a 4-0 home win against West Brom on April 11.

On April 14, Tevez scored a hat-trick and provided an assist for Sergio Agüero in a 6-1 away win against Norwich City. As a result, Sheffield United first appealed to the Premier League relegation league. After this claim failed, the club sought compensation from West Ham as a result of the relegation. The first media reports suggested that Sheffield United was seeking £ 30 million, which they believed was the real cost of relegation.

The controversy continued for almost two years, fueled by various media reports and speculation. However, on March 17, 2009, both clubs reached an out-of-court settlement to settle their dispute, with West Ham paying £ 20 million (£ 4 million a year over the next five seasons) as compensation to Sheffield United.
