Who Is Aretha Franklin?

Aretha Louise Franklin was born March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee and died August 16, 2018, she was an American singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, and civil rights activist.

Aretha Franklin began her career as a child gospel singer at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, where her father C. L. Franklin was the pastor. At 18, she embarked on a secular music career as a recording artist for Columbia Records.

Although Franklin’s career did not immediately flourish, she gained commercial  success after signing with Atlantic Records in 1966, with Hit songs like “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)”, “Respect”, “(You Make Me Feel Like) Natural Woman “,” Chain of Fools “,” Think “, and” I Say a Little Prayer “. By the late 1960s, Aretha Franklin had become known as the “Soul Queen”.

She went-on to release several top singles, many of which are now considered classics. In 1987 she became the 1st female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2008 won her 18th Grammy Award, making her one of the most honoured artists in Grammy history.

She was the 4th of 5- children, Aretha Louise Franklin, was born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Reverend Clarence La Vaughan “C. L.” Baptist preacher. Franklin and Barbara Siggers Franklin, gospel singer.

Aretha Franklin’s parents separated when she was 6-years old, and four years later her mother died to a terrible heart attack.

Led by C. L.’s preaching assignments, the family moved to Detroit, Michigan. C. L. eventually landed at New Bethel Baptist Church, where she gained a national reputation as a preacher.

Aretha Franklin’s musical gifts emerged at an early age. Primarily self-taught, she was considered a prodigal child. A very talented pianist with a powerful voice, Franklin began to sing in front of her father’s audience.

By the age of 14, she had recorded some of her earliest tracks in his church, released by a small label such as the Songs of Faith album in 1956. She also performed with CL’s revival roadshow and, while on tour,  she performed along great gospel singers like Mahalia Jackson , Sam Cooke and Clara Ward.

But life on the road also exposed Franklin to adult behaviors, and at the age of 14, she became a mother for the first time with a son, Clarence. A second child, Edward, followed two years later — with both sons taking her family’s name. Franklin would later have two more sons: Ted White, Jr. and Kecalf Cunningham.

Yet life on the road also exposed Franklin to adult habits and at the age of 14,  she gave birth to her first son, Clarence, 2- years later, she gave birth to her second son, Edward, followed by two more sons : Ted White, Jr. and Kecalf Cunningham, taking the name of her father.

Aretha Franklin was twice married. Her first husband was Ted White, who she married in 1961 when she was 19-years old. Franklin had actually first seen her husband, White at a party  she held at her house in 1954.

After a controversial marriage involving domestic violence, She separated from White in 1968 and divorced in 1969. she married her second husband, actor Glynn Turman, on April 11, 1978, in her father’s church. By marrying Turman, Aretha Franklin became the stepmother of Turman’s three children from his previous marriage.

Franklin and Turman separated in 1982 after Franklin returned to Michigan from California, and they divorced in 1984. In 2012, Franklin had plans to marry her longtime companion Willie Wilkerson.

She and Wilkerson had been engaged twice before. Franklin eventually discontinued the 2012 engagement.

Death and funeral

On August 13, 2018, Franklin was reported seriously ill at her home in Riverfront Towers, Detroit. She was in hospice care and surrounded by friends and family. Stevie Wonder, Jesse Jackson and Glynn Turman’s ex-husband also visited her on her deathbed.

Aretha Franklin later died at her home on August 16, 2018, at the age of 76, without a written will. Cause of death was common form of pancreatic cancer.

Many celebrities in the entertainment industry and politicians paid tribute to Franklin, including former US president Barack Obama, who said it “helped define the American experience”. Civil rights activist and minister Al Sharpton called her “a civil and humanitarian rights icon”.

A memorial service was held at New Bethel Baptist Church on Aug. 19. Thousands then paid their respects during the public lying at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

A Homegoing Service was held at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, on August 31, featured multiple tributes from celebrities, politicians, friends and family members and was streamed by some news agencie like Fox News, CNN, The Word Network, BET and MSNBC.

Among those who paid tribute to Aretha in service were Loretta Devine, Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Bill Clinton, Rev. Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan, Faith Hill, Fantasia, The Clark Sisters, Ronald Isley, Chaka Khan, Jennifer Holliday, Queen Latifah, Shirley Caesar, Stevie Wonder, Eric Holder, Gladys Knight, Cedric the Entertainer, Tyler Perry, Smokey Robinson, and Yolanda Adams.

Aretha Franklin died without an official will in August 2018. Her estate was worth about $ 17 million last summer, although the family has been bickering since last spring when handwritten will was found at home.

A 2014 document indicates that she wanted Kecalf Franklin to manage her estate. A niece, Sabrina Owens, is now filling the role, but she wants to give up work, citing a “breakdown” in the family.

A lawyer for the son of Aretha Franklin  asked a judge to keep an eye on professional fees paid by the estate of the late singer, the latest jab in a dispute over the properties left by the Queen of Soul.
